Unity is the Heart of Community

Since 1981, people in Victoria devoted to peace, the earth and justice, have gathered on a Saturday in April to unite and celebrate.

Dr. Helen Caldicott

This year, Dr. Helen Caldicott, founder of the Nobel Peace Prize winners International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, will be headlining the main stage at the BC Legislature. Hear her powerful, inspiring words (944 K MP3) right now.

Other speakers at this years walk include:

  • Marilyn Rust, from Health Employees Union (HEU) and the Communities Solidarity Coalition (CSC)
  • Guy Dauncey, Environmental Activist and author of Earth Future
  • Jacquie Ackerly, Social and Economic Justice Advocate from the Anti-Poverty Coalition, and
  • Mohammed Ahmed, Sufi Drummer and Poet will be sharing his heartfelt music and concerns about the current situation in occupied Iraq.

Arts and entertainment, including
musicians include:

  • Rae Spoon
  • The Jeremy Walsh Band
  • Carolyn Mark and Her New Best Friends
  • Rejean
  • Chrystee Bull
  • and others...

Information tables from a variety of community organizations will be set up as well as a children's tent with lots of activities including songs, colouring and face painting. Food Not Bombs will be serving some of their delicious vegan meals.

We hope that you will join in the days events with us as we work to build healthy peaceful communities that are socially, environmentally and economically just in the face of the madness of wars, occupations and
global corporatization.

as passionately about the local and global communities as you do," said MC Jim Hedger.

The Walk for Global Justice began over two decades ago as the Peace Walk, and in the 1990s was called the Earth Walk.

The focus on justice reflects a growing concern over large free trade deals and their strong tendency to lower democratic, peace, environment, health and labour standards worldwide and here in British Columbia.

The 2003 Walk will take place Saturday, April 26th at noon. Meet at Victoria City Hall's Centennial Square, or at the end of the Walk, 1 pm at the Legislature Buildings, for a full afternoon of great music and thought-provoking speakers.

That evening the Annual Peace, Earth & Justice Fest will be held. This incredible licensed concert will include longer performances by top-rate musicians, including Carolyn Mark and Her New Best Friends, The Jeremy Walsh Band, Rae Spoon, Barley Wik, Oliver Swain and Poets For Peace. Peace, Earth & Justice Week takes place every year from April 22 to May 1 (Earth Day to May Day), and this year includes 75 separate events!

With dozens of calendar activities organized by scores of local agencies throughout the Gulf and Vancouver Islands, what has been known as the annual Earth Week program is the largest and most diverse in Canada, including environmental, peace, cultural and humanitarian activities. Over the years, it has included community clean-ups, media and awareness campaigns, direct action, conferences and public forums, workshops, tree plantings, nature tours, fairs and festivals, ceremonies, launches, legislation, community walks, concerts, arts and crafts exhibitions.

We still need more volunteers to organize the Walk. If you can help, please email volunteers@justicewalk.ca.
